The Modena research center CRIT and the engineering company Hypertec Solution of Cesena are the promoters of the HYBRIDTECH and E-MUV3R programs, financed in total for one million euros by the Emilia-Romagna Region: they will develop new solutions for the electrification of two-wheeled vehicles and three wheels that are both high-performance, agile and safe
Is the Motor Valley of Emilia-Romagna ready to switch from the combustion engine to the electric one? The 4-wheeled transport supply chain certainly does, driven by regulatory constraints and time deadlines that are now unavoidable. However, the matter becomes more complicated if we consider the point of view of the motorcycle companies: for them too, electric mobility will inevitably constitute the near future, but overcoming fossil fuels will require challenging and innovative technological solutions.
The Emilia-Romagna Region – which has always been attentive to supporting the development and technological research of the automotive sector – has allocated one million euros in this direction, through the call for strategic industrial research projects of the regional ERDF 2021\2027 program which it finances with 500 thousand euros each for two highly innovative projects: HYBRIDTECH (which aims to create a new hybrid power-unit technology for motorcycles), and E-MUV3R, aimed at creating a multi-purpose electric platform for sustainable mobility in city areas of the 3-wheeled vehicles
The two projects will involve universities and companies of excellence in the regional territory, and will be coordinated and implemented by CRIT – a Modena research center specialized in technological innovation applied to the manufacturing industry – and Hypertec Solution, a Cesena-based multidisciplinary engineering company with high technological content. Two centers of excellence of the regional university research system will also be involved in the program: the Intermech Center of UniMoRE (which will support the development and testing of the new propulsion system with its skills in computational fluid dynamics and optimization of control strategies), and the UniFE’s Mechlav laboratory, which will develop the vehicle dynamics optimization platform and electronic component management.
“The two projects have different approaches but are devoted to a single goal: to provide concrete solutions to have efficient and effective means of transport for today’s needs” declares Filippo Guidazzi, CEO of Hypertec Solution. The Romagna company specialized in mechanical and mechatronic design, has developed key skills in various industrial sectors, including automotive and aerospace, and thanks to its huge experience it will guarantee the contribution of valuable technical skills, as well as the possibility of having use -concrete cases for the validation of the prototypes that will be developed. With the HYBRIDTECH project – adds Guidazzi – a hybrid power-unit for motorcycles will be created, based on the integration of an electric motor and a very high efficiency internal combustion engine, conceived and designed by the Hypertec Solution R&D center which has already created the first single-cylinder prototype, characterized by very low emissions and consumption. Furthermore, this new hybrid engine will reduce noise and optimize the weight/power ratio of the power unit which will therefore be able to be integrated into a wide range of motorcycles, including sports ones”.
The aim of E-MUV3R will instead be the design of a complete means of transport that will act as a link between motorcycles and cars, based on a 3-wheel architecture that will guarantee high agility and at the same time safety in city areas and/or on extra-urban routes. In addition to this, a totally electric power unit will also make it possible to contribute to the ecological transition of these innovative means of transport.
The Modena research center CRIT will take care of maximizing the impact of the project results on the territory: “Our role within the research consortium – underlines Marco Baracchi, General Director of CRIT – will be to manage the communication activity, dissemination and valorisation of the results of both the HYBRIDTECH and E-MUV3R projects, also through the organization and implementation of specific workshops and networking activities. CRIT was chosen due to the close relationship established both with Hypertec and with both laboratories which are involved. In particular, Hypertec Solution is part of our Accredited Supplier Network, which over the years has developed into a real network of companies with the aim of promoting synergy between member companies and the implementation of innovative activities and projects”.
