The Modena-based research center CRIT and Hypertec Solution are the promoters of the HYBRIDTECH and E-MUV3R programs, jointly funded with €1 million by the Regione Emilia-Romagna. The initiatives aim to develop new solutions for the electrification of two- and three-wheel vehicles that combine performance, agility, and safety.
Green mobility: are we ready for the transition?
The four-wheel transport supply chain is undoubtedly moving forward, driven by regulatory constraints and increasingly unavoidable deadlines. The situation is more complex, however, when considering motorcycle manufacturers. For them as well, electric mobility represents the inevitable future, but moving beyond fossil fuels will require challenging and highly innovative technological solutions.
The Regione Emilia-Romagna—long committed to supporting technological development and research in the automotive sector—has allocated €1 million to this effort through the strategic industrial research call under the Regional ERDF (FESR) 2021–2027 program. This funding supports two highly innovative projects with €500,000 each:
HYBRIDTECH, focused on developing a new hybrid power-unit technology for motorcycles;
E-MUV3R, aimed at creating a multi-purpose electric platform for three-wheel vehicles designed for urban green mobility.
Both projects will involve leading universities and companies from across the region and will be coordinated and implemented by CRIT and Hypertec Solution.
The program also includes two centers of excellence from the regional academic research system: the Intermech Center of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, which will support the development and testing of the new propulsion system through expertise in computational fluid dynamics and control strategy optimization and the MechLav laboratory of the University of Ferrara, responsible for developing vehicle dynamics optimization platforms and electronic component management systems.
“The two projects follow different approaches but share a common goal: delivering concrete solutions to the need for efficient and effective transportation” declares Filippo Guidazzi, CEO of Hypertec Solution. The company specializes in mechanical and mechatronic design and has developed key expertise across multiple industries, including automotive and aerospace. Leveraging this experience, Hypertec Solution will contribute advanced technical know-how and provide real-world use cases for prototype validation.“With the HYBRIDTECH project ,adds Guidazzi, “we will develop a hybrid power unit for motorcycles based on the integration of an electric motor and a highly efficient internal combustion engine.This system has been conceived and designed by Hypertec Solution’s R&D center, which has already produced a first single-cylinder prototype characterized by extremely low emissions and fuel consumption.
In addition, this new hybrid engine will reduce noise levels and optimize the power-to-weight ratio, making it suitable for integration across a wide range of motorcycles, including high-performance models.”
The E-MUV3R project, on the other hand, focuses on designing a complete vehicle that acts as a bridge between motorcycles and cars. Based on a three-wheel architecture, it will ensure high agility while maintaining strong safety standards in both urban and extra-urban environments.
A fully electric power unit will support the transition to green mobility, extending sustainability to this new category of transport solutions.
The Modena-based research center CRIT will be responsible for maximizing the regional impact of the project results.
“Our role within the research consortium,” explains Marco Baracchi, General Director of CRIT, “will be to manage communication, dissemination, and the enhancement of the results of both the HYBRIDTECH and E-MUV3R projects, including through the organization of dedicated workshops and networking activities.
CRIT was selected due to the strong relationship established with both Hypertec Solution and the two laboratories involved. In particular, Hypertec Solution is part of our Accredited Supplier Network, which over the years has evolved into a true ecosystem of companies aimed at fostering synergy among its members and enabling the development of innovative activities and projects.”
